Subnautica 2 Mod Station & Upgrades Guide — All Tool & Gear Upgrades

The Modification Station (or Mod Station for short) is one of the most important crafting stations in Subnautica 2. It is where you upgrade your tools, weapons, and equipment to keep pace with the increasing dangers of Proteus II's oceans. This guide covers every upgrade available at the Mod Station, what each one does, and the order you should pursue them in for the most efficient progression.

What Is the Mod Station?

The Mod Station is a deployable crafting station that lets you upgrade your standard tools and equipment into enhanced versions. Unlike the Fabricator, which creates items from raw materials, the Mod Station takes an existing item and improves it — adding damage, capacity, speed, or special abilities.

You unlock the Mod Station blueprint after scanning your first two or three fragments in the Shallow Twisty Bridges biome. Look for damaged research pods and abandoned equipment crates — they usually contain at least one Mod Station fragment.

Pro Tip

Build two Mod Stations — one for your main base and one for your Sea Truck. Being able to upgrade equipment on the fly during deep exploration runs saves you from having to surface and return to base mid-expedition.

Tool Upgrades

Your core tools all have upgrade paths at the Mod Station. Each upgrade improves the tool's primary function and sometimes adds new abilities entirely.

Scanner Upgrade

The Scanner is your most important tool, and its upgrade is correspondingly impactful.

  • Scanner (Tier 1) — Default. 100m range, slow scan speed.
  • Scanner Upgrade Mk1 — 150m range, 25% faster scanning. Requires: Copper Wire x2, Wiring Kit.
  • Scanner Upgrade Mk2 — 200m range, 50% faster scanning, detects resources through terrain. Requires: Advanced Wiring Kit, Magnetite.

The Mk2 scanner's ability to see resources through rock is genuinely game-changing. You will find yourself constantly scanning as you explore, picking up deposits you would otherwise have walked right past.

Survival Knife Upgrades

Your knife is both a harvesting tool and a weapon. Upgrades improve both:

  • Tempered Knife — 50% more damage, faster resource harvesting. Requires: Titanium x3, Lead.
  • Thermal Blade — Cooks fish instantly when you harvest them. Requires: Tempered Knife + Magnetite + Lithium.

The Thermal Blade is a quality of life upgrade that you will wonder how you ever lived without. Never again will you have to stop mid-exploration to find a cook station.

Flashlight Upgrades

  • High-Capacity Flashlight — Longer battery life, wider beam. Requires: Battery x2, Glass.
  • UV Flashlight — Emits UV light that repels certain aggressive creatures. Requires: High-Capacity Flashlight + Magnetite.

The UV Flashlight is surprisingly useful in deeper biomes where swarm-type creatures are common. A quick burst will scatter most small predators, giving you breathing room to escape or reposition.

Diving Gear Upgrades

Your suit, fins, and oxygen tank all have upgrade paths that dramatically expand your exploration capabilities.

Oxygen Tank Upgrades

TankOxygen CapacityDepth RatingCrafting Cost
Standard O2 Tank75 seconds200mStarter / Fabricator
High-Capacity O2 Tank135 seconds500mTitanium x4 + Glass x2
Lightweight High-Capacity Tank135 seconds800mHigh-Cap Tank + Aerogel x2
Plasteel Tank225 seconds1,300mLightweight Tank + Plasteel Ingot x2

The Lightweight variant is particularly important because the standard High-Capacity tank slows you down. The Lightweight version restores normal swim speed while keeping the increased oxygen — a pure upgrade in every way.

Fins Upgrades

  • Standard Fins — Base swim speed.
  • Glide Fins — 25% faster swimming, better glide. Requires: Silicone Rubber x2 + Titanium.
  • Ultra Glide Fins — 50% faster swimming, exceptional glide. Requires: Glide Fins + Benzene x2.
  • Swim Charge Fins — Generates power as you swim. Requires: Glide Fins + Wiring Kit + Magnetite.

Swim Charge Fins are a personal favorite. They do not generate a lot of power, but over the course of a long exploration run, they can top off your Sea Truck's battery by a meaningful amount. Every little bit helps in the deep biomes.

Dive Suit Upgrades

  • Standard Dive Suit — Starter. 200m crush depth, no temperature protection.
  • Reinforced Dive Suit — 500m crush depth, minor damage resistance. Requires: Fiber Mesh x4 + Titanium x3.
  • Stillsuit — Recycles body moisture into drinking water. Requires: Reinforced Suit + Bleach x2.
  • Thermal Suit — 800m crush depth, full heat and cold protection. Requires: Reinforced Suit + Aerogel x2 + Magnetite.
  • Reinforced Thermal Suit — 1,300m crush depth, temperature protection + damage resistance. Requires: Thermal Suit + Plasteel Ingot.
Depth Warning

Always check your crush depth before diving deeper. Going below your suit's rating deals continuous crush damage that will kill you surprisingly fast. If your vision starts tunneling and you hear a ringing sound, surface immediately — you are past your depth limit.

Weapon Upgrades

The Subnautica series is not primarily about combat, but you will need to defend yourself, and weapon upgrades make a big difference.

Stasis Rifle Upgrades

  • Stasis Rifle (Standard) — Freezes targets in place for 8 seconds. 5 shots per battery.
  • Stasis Rifle Mk2 — 12 second freeze duration, 8 shots per battery, larger blast radius. Requires: Stasis Rifle + Advanced Wiring Kit + Magnetite.

The Stasis Rifle is your best weapon against large predators. A well-timed shot freezes even leviathan-class creatures long enough to escape or reposition.

Propulsion Cannon / Repulsion Cannon

  • Propulsion Cannon — Pulls objects and creatures toward you, then launches them. Great for moving obstacles and stunning enemies.
  • Repulsion Cannon — Upgraded version. Pushes things away with much greater force. Requires: Propulsion Cannon + Magnetite x2 + Titanium x4.

The Repulsion Cannon is one of the most fun tools in the game. It does not deal direct damage, but it launches creatures with enough force to kill them if they hit something hard. It is also invaluable for quickly clearing cave-ins or moving large debris.

Recommended Upgrade Order

If you want the most efficient progression path, follow this order:

  1. Scanner Mk1 — Find resources faster, unlock blueprints sooner
  2. High-Capacity O2 Tank — Stay down longer, explore further
  3. Glide Fins — Swim faster, cover more ground per dive
  4. Tempered Knife — Harvest faster, better early defense
  5. Reinforced Dive Suit — Unlock deeper biomes
  6. Scanner Mk2 — See resources through terrain (game changer)
  7. Thermal Blade — Quality of life upgrade
  8. Thermal Suit — Access deepest biomes

The Mod Station is the engine that drives your progression in Subnautica 2. Every upgrade you craft expands what you can do and where you can go. Invest in upgrades early and often — they always pay for themselves.
