Power is the backbone of every base in Subnautica 2. Without enough energy, your fabricators go dark, your oxygen production stops, and your Scanner Room goes silent. This guide covers every power generation method in the game, from the humble Solar Panel to the endgame Thermal Plant, and teaches you how to build an energy grid that never runs dry.

Power Generation Overview

Subnautica 2 features several power generation methods, each suited to different depths, biomes, and progression stages. Understanding when to use each one is the key to a well-powered base.

Solar Panels — The Starter Solution

Solar Panels are the first power source you will build, and for good reason. They are cheap, require no fuel, and provide plenty of power for a small base near the surface.

How Solar Panels Work

Solar Panels generate electricity from sunlight. Their output depends on two factors:

  • Depth — Panels generate full power near the surface, but output drops as you go deeper. Below about 50 meters, they produce almost nothing.
  • Day/Night Cycle — Panels only generate power during the day. At night, output drops to zero.

A single Solar Panel generates 250W at peak output. A small base (habitat + fabricator + basic tools) uses about 50-100W when idle, so one panel is usually enough to start. You will want more as you expand.

Solar Panel Strategy

  • Build panels on the surface or on shallow seabed
  • Start with 2-3 panels for a small base
  • Pair with batteries for nighttime power
  • Replace with better generators as you go deeper
Pro Tip

Do not tear down your Solar Panels when you upgrade to better power generation. They still contribute free power during the day, reducing the load on your fuel-based generators. Every watt counts.

Bio Generator — The Reliable Workhorse

The Bio Generator is the first "always on" power source you unlock. It burns organic matter — plants, seeds, fish, even eggs — to produce a steady 200W of power, day or night, at any depth.

The Bio Generator will burn virtually anything organic. Different fuels provide different amounts of energy:

Bio Generator Tips

  • Farm your fuel — Build an exterior growbed with creepvines for a steady, renewable fuel source
  • Stack them — Each Bio Generator provides 200W. Need 600W? Build three.
  • Top off before bed — Load the generator with fuel before logging off so your base stays powered
  • Use excess fish — Have too many fish in your aquarium? Toss them in the Bio Generator.

Thermal Plants — The Mid-Game Upgrade

Thermal Plants are the game-changer for base power. These generators draw energy from geothermal heat, providing 250W of continuous, zero-fuel power — as long as you build them near a heat source.

How Thermal Plants Work

Thermal Plants generate power based on the temperature difference between the plant and the surrounding water. The hotter the environment, the more power they produce. At maximum heat (near lava vents), they produce a full 250W each.

The key constraint is placement. Thermal Plants must be built:

  • Near thermal vents, lava flows, or other heat sources
  • Directly on the seabed (not on base foundations)
  • Within transmission range of your base or Power Transmitter
Placement Warning

Thermal Plants only work on natural seabed. You cannot place them on base structures, foundations, or platforms. They also will not generate power if they are too far from a heat source. Always check the temperature readout before you build — it shows exactly how much power the plant will produce at that location.

Finding Thermal Vents

Thermal vents are scattered across Proteus II's ocean floor. The best areas to look are:

  • Deep Purple Vents — The name says it all. Abundant thermal activity.
  • Crystal Caves — Scattered thermal vents throughout the cave system
  • Lava Zone — Maximum heat, maximum power. Endgame territory.
  • Deep Twisty Bridges — A few smaller vents in the deeper sections

Use your Scanner Room to locate thermal features. They show up as distinct heat signatures on the scan display.

Power Transmitters

Thermal Plants are often far from your base. That is where Power Transmitters come in. These devices relay power from generators to your base across long distances.

  • Each Power Transmitter has a range of 200 meters
  • Chain them together to cover longer distances
  • They have a small power loss per unit distance (about 5% per transmitter)
  • Build them high off the seabed for cleaner signal transmission
Thermal Plant Hack

For maximum efficiency, build multiple Thermal Plants clustered around the same vent area, then daisy-chain Power Transmitters back to base. A cluster of 4-6 thermal plants can power a large base indefinitely with zero fuel cost.

Nuclear Reactor — The Endgame Solution

The Nuclear Reactor is the ultimate power source in Subnautica 2. One reactor provides a massive 500W of continuous power, enough to run almost any base single-handedly. But it comes with significant costs and risks.

  • Requires Uraninite Crystals for fuel rods
  • Must be built with reinforced materials (Plasteel, Lead)
  • Emits low-level radiation (you need a Radiation Suit to work near it)
  • Fuel rods last a very long time but are expensive to make

Is the Nuclear Reactor Worth It?

That depends on your playstyle. For most players, a well-designed thermal power grid is sufficient and completely free to run. The Nuclear Reactor is for players who want maximum power density or who are building bases in areas without geothermal activity.

If you do go nuclear, build one reactor per large base and supplement with thermal or bio power for redundancy. Never rely entirely on a single power source.

Energy Storage

Generators produce power, but you also need to store it for peak usage. Batteries and Power Cells are your energy storage solution.

Battery Array

The Battery Array is a base module that stores surplus energy for later use. It is essentially a bank of batteries that charges when power generation exceeds consumption and discharges when demand is higher than supply.

  • Each array stores 500 units of energy
  • You can build multiple arrays for more storage
  • Critical for Solar-based bases (stores daytime power for nighttime use)
  • Provides a buffer against sudden power spikes

How Much Storage Do You Need?

As a rule of thumb, aim for enough battery storage to power your base for 5-10 minutes at peak consumption. That gives you plenty of time to react if your primary power source fails. For a typical mid-game base, 2-3 Battery Arrays is usually sufficient.

Power Efficiency Tips

Before you build more generators, see if you can reduce your power consumption:

  • Turn off unused facilities — The Scanner Room uses a lot of power. Turn it off when you do not need it.
  • Use LED lighting — LED lights consume less power than standard lights
  • Consolidate bases — Instead of many small bases, build a few large ones. Centralized power is more efficient.
  • Prioritize free power — Solar and thermal are free. Maximize those before building fuel-based generators.

Recommended Power Progression

Follow this general progression for a smooth power curve:

  1. Solar Panels x2-3 — Starter base in the shallows
  2. Bio Generator x1-2 — First deep base, or nighttime backup
  3. Battery Array x1-2 — Energy storage for reliability
  4. Thermal Plants x3-4 — Once you find thermal vents, switch to free power
  5. More Thermal Plants — Expand as your base grows
  6. Nuclear Reactor (optional) — Only if you need more power than thermal can provide
