The Scanner Room is one of the most useful facilities you can build in Subnautica 2. It turns your base into a surveying hub, automatically scanning for resources, creatures, and wrecks within a wide radius. Set it up properly, and you will never waste time searching for materials again.
What Is the Scanner Room?
The Scanner Room is a multipurpose base module that performs several functions simultaneously:
- Passively scans the surrounding area for resources
- Tracks creature movements in real time
- Locates wrecks, fragments, and points of interest
- Provides holographic mapping of the surrounding terrain
- Generates camera drones for remote exploration
You unlock the Scanner Room blueprint relatively early — usually by scanning fragments in the Shallow Twisty Bridges or around the Drop Pod. It is one of the first specialized base modules you should build after you have a basic habitat up and running.
Crafting the Scanner Room
| Material | Amount | Where to Find |
|---|---|---|
| Titanium | 5 | Scrap metal, limestone outcrops |
| Copper Ore | 2 | Shallow Twisty Bridges, limestone |
| Glass | 2 | Crafted from quartz sand |
| Wiring Kit | 1 | Crafted from copper wire |
Build your Scanner Room at the center of your base complex if possible. Its scan radius extends outward from the room itself, so a central location covers the maximum area. Also, place it on a side with good visibility — you will be looking at that hologram a lot.
How Scanning Works
The Scanner Room has a base scan radius of 300 meters. Within that radius, it will detect and catalog:
- Resource deposits (all types)
- Large creature life signs
- Wrecks and abandoned facilities
- Fragment locations
- Thermal vents and geothermal features
Resources appear as colored dots on the holographic display — each color corresponds to a different material. You can filter the display to show only what you are looking for, which is incredibly useful when you need a specific resource for a project.
Scan Speed & Range
The Scanner Room updates its scan every few seconds. New resources that enter the range appear quickly, but the room does not "see" beyond its radius. To expand coverage, you have two options:
- Range Upgrade Modules — Each module adds 100m to the scan radius (up to a maximum of 500m with all upgrades)
- Multiple Scanner Rooms — Build additional rooms at outposts to cover more territory
Scanner Room Upgrades
You can significantly improve your Scanner Room by crafting upgrade modules at the Mod Station and installing them in the room's upgrade console.
| Upgrade | Effect | Crafting Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Range Upgrade | +100m scan radius (stackable, max +200m) | Copper Wire x2 + Magnetite |
| Speed Upgrade | 50% faster scan refresh rate (stackable) | Wiring Kit + Advanced Wiring Kit |
| Resource Detection Upgrade | Detects rare and deep resources (Magnetite, Uraninite, etc.) | Magnetite x2 + Diamond |
| Camera Drone Upgrade | Adds 2 additional camera drones (max 4 total) | Glass x2 + Wiring Kit |
Maximum Effective Range
With two Range Upgrades installed, your Scanner Room has a 500-meter radius. That means it covers a circle 1,000 meters across — a massive area that includes most of the shallow and mid-depth biomes around your base.
Scanner Rooms use a lot of power. A base Scanner Room with all upgrades draws more power than any other single module. Make sure your base power generation can handle it before loading up on upgrades. A single Solar Panel will not cut it — you will need at least a Bio Generator or Thermal Plant to run a fully upgraded Scanner Room continuously.
Camera Drones
Camera Drones are one of the most underrated features of the Scanner Room. These small, remotely operated cameras let you explore the area around your base without leaving the safety of your habitat.
Using Camera Drones
Each Scanner Room comes with 2 Camera Drones by default, upgradable to 4. To use a drone, interact with the Scanner Room console and select "Launch Drone." You will take direct control of the drone's camera and can pilot it around the surrounding area.
Drones have several advantages:
- Safe scouting — Explore dangerous areas without risking yourself
- Creature observation — Study predator behavior patterns without getting close
- Wreck inspection — Fly through wrecks to plan your entry route
- Resource verification — Fly to a detected resource to confirm its exact location
Drone Limitations
Drones are not without constraints:
- Limited range — Drones can only go 500m from the Scanner Room
- Fragile — Hostile creatures will attack and destroy drones if they spot them
- No interaction — Drones can only observe; they cannot collect items or scan fragments
- Single pilot — You can only control one drone at a time
Use drones to check deep cave entrances before you dive in. Fly a drone into a cave system to map the layout and check for predators. It will save you from unpleasant surprises when you go in for real.
Resource Surveying Strategies
The Scanner Room's primary purpose is finding resources, and there are several strategies to get the most out of it.
Build a Resource Grid
For large-scale resource gathering, build multiple Scanner Rooms in a grid pattern across the map. Each room covers a 500m radius, so spacing them 800m apart gives complete coverage with some overlap. Connect them with Base Teleporters (unlocked later in the game) for instant travel between survey points.
Filter for What You Need
Do not just leave the Scanner Room on "all resources" mode. The display can get cluttered and hard to read. Instead, use the filter system to show only the resources you currently need. Looking for Magnetite? Filter for Magnetite. Building something that needs Copper? Switch to Copper. The display becomes much more useful when it is not showing you every pebble in the ocean.
Use the HUD Chip
The Scanner Room HUD Chip is a craftable item you can equip that overlays resource directions on your HUD. It does not show exact positions — just direction and approximate distance — but it means you do not have to keep running back to the Scanner Room to check where things are. It is one of the most useful quality-of-life upgrades in the game.
Scanner Room Base Design
How you integrate the Scanner Room into your base matters. Here are some design tips:
- Center placement — Put it in the middle of your base for maximum coverage symmetry
- Observation deck — Build a glass corridor around it so you can see the hologram from outside
- Adjacent storage — Put storage lockers nearby so you can deposit gathered resources quickly
- Multiple rooms — For large bases, consider two Scanner Rooms at opposite ends for overlapping coverage
Outpost Scanner Rooms
As you progress deeper into the game, you will want to build outpost bases in distant biomes. Always include a Scanner Room in these outposts — it will help you survey the new area, find local resources, and keep an eye on dangerous creatures in the area.
Scanner Room outposts are particularly valuable in:
- The Deep Purple Vents — Rare deep resources are hard to find manually
- The Crystal Caves — Complex terrain makes visual searching difficult
- The Lava Zone — High temperature and low visibility make manual surveying dangerous
The Scanner Room is a force multiplier for any Subnautica 2 player. It turns aimless exploration into directed gathering, saves you hours of searching for specific materials, and gives you a level of situational awareness that would otherwise be impossible. Build one early, upgrade it fully, and let it do the hard work of finding things for you.
