Leviathan Types
Each Leviathan class behaves differently. The Reaper is a melee brawler that ambushes from the dark; the Ghost is faster, more translucent, and hunts in pairs in the deepest biomes. The Sea Treader looks terrifying but is actually neutral — its danger is environmental, not aggressive.
The Reaper Levine is the most common adult and patrols fixed sections of the Inactive Lava Zone, Mountains, and Crash Zone. The Ghost haunts the Crater Edge and Lost River, often appearing 200m above the lava fields. Sea Treaders cluster in the Sea Treader's Path biome where their footsteps can damage weak vehicles.
Reaper Leviathan
Ambush predator. One-hit KO on unarmored swimmers.
Mountains · Inactive Lava ZoneGhost Leviathan
Faster, more aggressive, often appears in pairs.
Crater Edge · Lost RiverSea Treader
Not hostile but creates environmental tremors.
Sea Treader's PathEarly Warning Signs
Audio cues are your earliest indicator. Each Leviathan has a distinct sound effect that plays — and increases in volume — as it closes distance. The Reaper emits a slow thumping roar that gets faster as it approaches. The Ghost's signal is a doubled scream that echoes across rock walls. The Sea Treader rumbles continuously and the tremors can be felt through vehicle hulls.
Visual cues come second: red eyes for the Reaper, the ghostly translucent shimmer for the Ghost, and the giant footfalls that mark Sea Treader paths. By the time you can see a Leviathan clearly, you are typically within 50m and its aggression is locked — you must commit to escape immediately.
Tell Chain
- 1. Distant sound (100m+)
- 2. Increasing volume and faster cycle (60–80m)
- 3. Visual silhouette appears (40–50m)
- 4. Charge initiates (30m)
Drop everything and go up. Most Leviathan aggro resets when you climb above the biome ceiling.
Escape Routes
The universal escape is upward. Leviathans disengage when players rise above the boundaries of their patrol biome. The Reaper loses interest around 200m above its spawn floor; the Ghost disengages more aggressively, often within 100m of ascent. Always know your depth at the start of any deep dive.
If you are inside the Cyclops, kill the engines entirely and let the creature pass. Engine noise increases detection radius. For PRAWN out of power, dock on a Seamoth or use a flash of Jump Jet Boost to break line of sight. Never try to outrun a Ghost directly — they are faster than any vehicle.
Vertical Escape
Use Airbladder or PRAWN Jump Jets. Maintain a 45-degree ascent to maximize distance from pursuit.
Stealth Escape
Hide in kelp, behind rock columns, or inside wreck interiors. Leviathans lose aggro after ~40s out of sight.
Avoidance vs Combat
Default to avoidance. Combat with Leviathans is only worth the risk when the rewards are immediate and significant — a needed fragment, the Lava Zone entry, or a pressure compensator. Outside those cases, every fight is a gamble that can lose you a Cyclops or hours of inventory.
If you must fight, the Stasis Rifle is the only worthwhile weapon. Freeze the creature, disengage to a safe distance, and only then decide whether to commit. The PRAWN's Torpedo Arm can finish a weakened Leviathan, but you will burn 4–6 torpedoes per Reaper and 8+ per adult Ghost. Plan for losses before engaging.
Decision Matrix
- In Seamoth — evade. Seamoth cannot win a fight.
- In PRAWN with Torpedo Arm — fight only if reward is essential.
- In Cyclops — stay inside and wait.
- On foot — escape upward immediately.
Tips & Warnings
Dangers
- Two Ghosts = certain Cyclops destruction
- Losing a PRAWN near lava is unrecoverable
- Sea Treader tremors damage Prawn Suit arms
Best Practices
- Save before every deep biome dive
- Carry 2x spare batteries for Stasis Rifle
- Use beacons to mark safe exit paths

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Reaper Leviathan destroy the Cyclops?
A single Reaper can break the Cyclops hull if you ignore it long enough. The standard tactic is to stay inside, kill engines to reduce detection, and ram the creature's side after it grabs you. Two consecutive Reaper encounters without repairs will destroy the Cyclops, so always patch between fights.
Does the Stasis Rifle work on Leviathans?
Yes. The Stasis Rifle freezes any Leviathan in place for roughly 25 seconds, which is enough time to disengage and escape. It does not damage the creature and works on Ghosts, Reapers, and adult Sea Treaders. Carry 3 spare batteries if you plan to use it as a defensive tool.
Are Leviathans peaceful in Subnautica 2?
Most Leviathans are aggressive on sight. Sea Treaders are the closest exception — they will not attack, but their tremors can damage fragile vehicles if you surface directly above their path. Treat every large creature with caution until you confirm its behavior.
