Description

The Reaper Leviathan is the most feared predator in Subnautica 2's open waters. It is instantly recognizable by its massive size, rows of mandible claws, and the bone-chilling roar that echoes across the Dunes and Crash Zone. The Reaper is an ambush predator that hunts by sound and movement — it will lock onto a target from a great distance and close in with terrifying speed. Its signature attack is a devastating grab, snatching players and even small vehicles in its mandibles. Reapers patrol the waters around the Aurora wreckage and across the Dunes, making these zones some of the most dangerous in the game. Their roar is your primary warning system — if you hear it, a Reaper is near.

Behavior & Ecology

Reaper Leviathans are aggressive, long-range hunters that patrol open water in search of prey. Unlike the reef-bound Reef Leviathan, Reapers cover large territories and will actively pursue targets over considerable distances. They hunt by detecting movement and sound, so swimming fast or using a vehicle near their territory will draw their attention. The Reaper's roar is its most distinctive feature — it serves as both a hunting call and a territorial warning. Reapers typically patrol at depths between 50 and 500m, favoring the open waters around the Aurora and the sandy expanses of the Dunes. They will grab players off Seamoths and even attempt to attack larger vehicles like the Cyclops.

Roar Warning

The Reaper's roar can be heard from a great distance. If you hear it, a Reaper has detected you and is likely closing in. Use the sound to gauge direction and distance.

Grab Attack

The Reaper's signature move is a devastating grab with its mandibles. It can snatch players from the water and even grab small vehicles, dealing massive damage.

How to Avoid

The best strategy for dealing with Reaper Leviathans is to avoid their territory entirely. The Dunes and Crash Zone are their primary hunting grounds, so plan routes that circumvent these areas. When passage through Reaper territory is unavoidable, move slowly and quietly — Reapers detect movement and sound, so sprint-swimming or using a fast vehicle will attract them. Listen for the roar and use it to track the Reaper's position, then adjust your course to maintain maximum distance. Traveling near the seafloor or along terrain features can provide cover from their patrol routes.

Move Quietly

Reapers detect movement and sound. Swim slowly through their territory rather than sprinting, and avoid using the Seaglide at full speed near their patrol routes.

Route Around

Plan routes that avoid the Dunes and Crash Zone entirely. Use the interactive map to identify safe corridors between biomes that bypass Reaper territory.

Listen for the Roar

The Reaper's roar is audible from far away and indicates it has detected you. Use the sound direction to track its position and steer clear before it closes in.

Combat & Survival Tips

If a Reaper Leviathan attacks, survival depends on quick reaction and the right equipment. In a Seamoth, immediately deploy the perimeter defense system to shock the Reaper and break its grab. In a PRAWN suit, use the grappling arm to propel yourself away and the drill to deter pursuit. On foot without a vehicle, your only option is to use the Seaglide to dodge perpendicular to its charge and reach terrain cover. Never engage a Reaper without a fully repaired vehicle and an escape plan. The Reaper's grab can be escaped by pressing the interaction key rapidly, but the damage taken is still severe.

Perimeter Defense

Equip the Seamoth Perimeter Defense System and deploy a pulse the moment a Reaper grabs you. The shock breaks its grip and stuns it briefly, buying escape time.

Grapple Away

In a PRAWN suit, fire the grappling arm at terrain to propel yourself away from the Reaper. Use the drill arm to deter it from following during your retreat.

Dodge Perpendicular

On foot, use the Seaglide to dodge perpendicular to the Reaper's charge. Its attack is linear and telegraphed, so a sharp lateral move can cause it to miss.

Map Locations

Reaper Leviathans patrol the Dunes biome and the waters around the Aurora wreckage in the Crash Zone, typically from 50 to 500m depth. They are also found along the edges of the Mountains biome. Use the interactive map to identify Reaper patrol zones and plan routes that circumvent the Dunes and Crash Zone, keeping you in safer biomes during transit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where to find Reaper Leviathan?

Reaper Leviathans patrol open waters near the Aurora wreckage in the Crash Zone and across the Dunes biome at 50 to 500m depth. They are also encountered along the edges of the Mountains biome. The easiest way to detect a Reaper before you see it is to listen for its distinctive roar. Use the interactive map to identify Reaper patrol zones and plan routes that bypass the Dunes and Crash Zone.

How to survive Reaper Leviathan attack?

To survive a Reaper Leviathan attack, immediately deploy a perimeter defense pulse if you are in a Seamoth — the shock breaks its grab and stuns it. In a PRAWN suit, use the grappling arm to propel away and the drill to deter pursuit. On foot, use the Seaglide to dodge perpendicular to its charge and seek terrain cover. If grabbed, rapidly press the interaction key to break free. Always have a fully repaired vehicle and an escape route planned before entering Reaper territory.

Can you kill Reaper Leviathan?

Killing a Reaper Leviathan is possible with a fully upgraded PRAWN suit equipped with a drill arm and gas torpedoes, but it requires significant time, resources, and skill. The Reaper has enormous health, deals extreme damage, and its open-water territory offers no cover to exploit. The risk of losing your vehicle or dying makes combat impractical. Avoidance is always the safer and more efficient strategy.
