Early Survival Guide: Your First Hour in Subnautica 2

A step-by-step walkthrough of your first hour in Subnautica 2 Early Access — oxygen, food, water, basic crafting, and the mistakes new divers make when panic sets in.

Lifepod Setup

You wake up alone in a damaged lifepod drifting above an alien ocean. The first ten minutes set the tone for your entire run — panic loses oxygen, calm wins loot. The pod itself comes with a small Fabricator, a Beacon, two Batteries, a small supply of drinking water, and a few salvageable fragments scattered around the interior panel.

The most important first action is to power up the Fabricator. While you do that, use the Scanner on the wall fragments in the pod interior — one of them is the Habitat Builder blueprint, and you can scan it before you even leave the pod. The Survival Knife is the second priority; with it you can defend yourself against early Stalkers that circle the pod.

What's in the Pod

  • Fabricator (already built)
  • 2x Battery
  • 1x Water Bottle (filled)
  • 1x Nutrient Block (emergency food)
  • Salvageable wall fragments

First Actions Checklist

  1. 1. Pick up everything you can carry.
  2. 2. Scan the wall fragment for Habitat Builder.
  3. 3. Use the Fabricator to build the Survival Knife.
  4. 4. Drink your water bottle if hydration drops below 50.
  5. 5. Equip the Knife and step outside onto the pod ramp.

First Resources

Shallow waters around your lifepod hold almost everything you need to leave the early game behind. Limestone outcrops yield Titanium and Copper — the two workhorse materials of every starter recipe. Coral tubes scattered across the seafloor drop Copper and a chance at Gold. Acid mushrooms and Gel Sacks supplement early food and synthesizing needs.

Do not venture past 100 meters on your first day. The Kelp Forest and Grassy Plateaus biomes surrounding the pod contain dense material fields; you should be able to gather a full inventory of Titanium and Copper in just three or four dives. Pick up every Battery ingredient you can find on the seafloor — they save time later.

Resource Priority by Usefulness

Titanium — from Limestone Outcrops. Universal material for every tool, vehicle, and base piece.
Copper — from Limestone and Coral. Required for batteries, wire, and electronics.
Quartz — from sandstone deposits. Needed for glass and lubricant.
Salt — from Salt Deposits. Crafting ingredient for bleach and batteries.
Gel Sack — from Gel Sack plants in kelp. Used for silicone and water filtration.
Acid Mushroom — from caves. Crafting ingredient for batteries and certain recipes.

Crafting Priority

The crafting order matters more than the crafting itself. Many players waste their first hour on the wrong tools and starve for oxygen as a result. The correct priority is mobility before technology — once you can move quickly and stay underwater longer, every other craft becomes dramatically easier.

After Knife, Scanner, and Flashlight, your next big investment is the Seaglide. It is a Tier 2 recipe that demands more materials, but it is the single most transformative item in the first two hours. The Fins unlock soon after and stack well with the Seaglide. Save the Repair Tool and Habitat Builder for after you have established a basic base scaffold.

Tier 0 — Immediately

  • Survival Knife
  • Scanner
  • Flashlight
  • Fins

Tier 1 — First Hour

  • Seaglide
  • Standard O2 Tank
  • High Capacity Tank
  • Repair Tool

Tier 2 — End of Day 1

  • Habitat Builder
  • Beacon
  • Radiation Suit (near Aurora)
  • Seamoth fragments

Common Mistakes

Every new diver makes the same handful of errors. Most of them are recoverable; a few are not. The good news is that avoiding these mistakes is mostly about pacing — slow down in shallow water, take breaks at the surface, and never rush toward a sound you do not recognize.

Diving Too Deep, Too Fast

The single biggest killer in Subnautica 2. If your Standard O2 Tank cannot carry you down and back without surfacing, you are not ready for that depth. Stay within 100m until you have the High Capacity Tank.

Ignoring Stalkers

Stalkers around the pod look cute and curious. They will absolutely bite you and steal your harvested Titanium. Carry the Knife, do not let them surround you, and harvest inside the pod if aggression persists.

Dehydration Death Spiral

Water drops fast in the early game. Many players forget to drink and notice only when they are at 5%. Always carry one cooked Bladderfish or maintain a stocked inventory of bottled water before long dives.

Forgetting the Battery

Tool batteries drain quickly during long scans and Seaglide runs. Carry two batteries minimum, swap on the fly, and never dive with an empty flashlight if you intend to enter any cave.

Tips & Warnings

Danger

  • Stalkers at the pod ramp bite and steal.
  • Bone Sharks patrol the Grassy Plateaus at dusk.
  • Crabsquids near caves can disable your flashlight.

Smart Moves

  • Scan every fragment you pass, even if you don't need it yet.
  • Build a small locker inside the pod for spare inventory.
  • Place a Beacon on the lifepod the moment you spawn.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I craft first in Subnautica 2?

Your first crafts should be the Survival Knife, the Scanner, and the Flashlight. The Knife is for defense and resource harvesting, the Scanner unlocks blueprints, and the Flashlight is essential at night and inside wrecks. The Seaglide becomes priority #1 the moment you have the materials because it transforms your mobility entirely.

How do I get water in Subnautica 2?

Early water comes from the Bladderfish's water content when cooked, plus the Saltwater bottles you spawn with in the lifepod. The dedicated Water Filtration Machine unlocks later as a base module and produces filtered water automatically. In a pinch, harvest creepvine samples or craft Bladderfish cooked in the Fabricator.

Where should I build my first base?

A shallow kelp forest or grassy plateau near your lifepod. Build close enough to swim back without drowning, but close enough to limestone outcrops and coral tubes that material runs stay short. Stay above 30 meters to keep hull integrity risks minimal until you have Reinforced foundations unlocked.
