Role Assignment
Co-op succeeds when each player has a clear job. The strongest default split is Pilot / Builder / Scout / Farmer. This way, nobody is idling, and every expedition has a clear point of contact for navigation, defense, and resource return.
The Pilot owns the Seamoth or Cyclops and never leaves the cockpit for more than a quick scan. The Builder focuses on Habitat Builder expansions and module crafting at the base. The Scout uses the Seaglide for deep-water navigation and beacon placement. The Farmer maintains the bioreactors and water filtration.
Pilot
- Owns the Seamoth or Cyclops
- Decides expedition routes
- Maintains periscope + sonar
- Calls retreats when Leviathans approach
Builder
- Habitat Builder & base expansion
- Module installation
- Power grid maintenance
- Lockers + inventory audits
Scout
- Seaglide + Reinforced Dive Suit
- Beacon placement for routes
- Early-warning on predators
- Re-entry if a player drowns
Farmer
- Bioreactor feeding (Stalkers)
- Water Filtration checks
- Food prep + rationing
- Filter cleaning every 2 cycles
Resource Sharing
Resource nodes are shared across all players in the same session — if Player A mines a Limestone Outcrop, it stays depleted for Players B, C, and D. Coordinate dives so you do not double-mine the same area and waste oxygen on overlap.
Lockers are the right tool for inventory pooling. Establish a Locker-Stash Convention: Titanium goes into Locker 1, Copper into Locker 2, and Batteries into Locker 3. Each player deposits on return from a dive and withdraws on exit. This avoids the "everyone has 4 Titanium and 0 Copper" trap.
Share Conventions
- Divide biomes: 4 players, 4 quadrants, no overlap.
- Always deposit before equipping the next dive.
- Spare batteries and water in shared Locker 3.
Base Building
Co-op base construction is dramatically faster than solo, but only if you divide tasks. Builder owns module placement (foundations, corridors, multipurpose rooms). Farmer supplies power (solar + bio + thermal). Scout pre-stages materials to the construction site. Pilot handles the Cyclops ferrying.
Reserve one section of the base for each player so they can customize storage. The Builder's "personal" area becomes the spare-parts room, the Farmer's is the food zone, and so on. Keep shared spaces (Moonpool, central Fabricator) at the geometric center so no one player has a long walk between rooms.
Build Order
Habitat Builder → Foundation → Multipurpose Room → Fabricator → Power → Moonpool → Specialist modules.
Avoid This
All four players placing foundations simultaneously — desyncs frequently and the ghost-snapping bug can break beams.
Danger Zones
Danger zones are easier in co-op because you have eyes in four directions. The standard squad tactic for Leviathan encounters: Scout calls the warning from the periscope, Pilot engages silent running, Builder deploys a decoy, Farmer prepares a med-kit or extra O2 tank. Roll-play the rescue when one diver is caught.
In the lava zones and the Crater Edge, run a tight 2x2 formation: Pilot + Builder inside the Cyclops, Scout + Farmer outside in PRAWN suits. The PRAWN pair watches for Leviathan charges while the Cyclops stays in silent mode. If a PRAWN loses power, dock on the Cyclops immediately and recharge from the engine room.
Formation Rules
- Never split beyond periscope range in Leviathan biomes.
- Always carry a Stasis Rifle in the defensive slot.
- Save the game before each major descent.
Tips & Warnings
Pitfalls
- Double-mining the same outcrop wastes oxygen
- Desync when entering/leaving vehicles (now patched)
- Loss of inventory on host quit
Best Practices
- Speak up the moment you see a Leviathan
- Drop excess materials at base on every return
- Use the Co-op Planner tool for shared schedules

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best role split for 4-player Subnautica 2?
One pilot, one builder, one scout, one farmer. The pilot runs the Cyclops or Seamoth and stays on the surface route. The builder handles Habitat Builder and base expansion. The scout uses the Seaglide for deep navigation. The farmer stays shallow and feeds the bioreactors.
Do resources respawn for everyone in co-op?
No. Resource nodes are shared across the entire session in co-op — if one player mines a Limestone Outcrop, it stays mined for everyone. Plan dives to avoid material waste and split biomes by quadrant between players.
Can two players pilot the Cyclops in co-op?
Only one player can pilot the Cyclops at a time, but a co-pilot can manage Sonar, Engine, and periscope from the second station. Most squads use one pilot and leave the second station to a defender with a Stasis Rifle and a Repair Tool.
