Description

The Crabsquid is a large, predatory crustacean that haunts the deep biomes and alien ruins of Subnautica 2. Its body is a hybrid of crab and squid — a broad armored shell supported by powerful legs, with tentacle-like appendages trailing behind it. The Crabsquid's most dangerous ability is its EMP (electromagnetic pulse) blast, which it deploys when threatened or when it detects electronic light sources. This pulse disables vehicle systems, kills lights, and leaves players blind and vulnerable in the dark depths. Crabsquids are aggressive hunters that patrol ruined structures and deep-water corridors, using the darkness and their EMP to disorient prey before closing in for the kill.

Behavior & Ecology

Crabsquids are territorial predators that favor dark, enclosed environments like the Lost River and alien ruin complexes. They are highly sensitive to light — a vehicle's headlights or a player's flashlight will draw their attention and trigger an EMP blast. When the EMP fires, it creates a visible electrical disruption that kills all lights in its radius, plunging the area into total darkness. This is when the Crabsquid strikes, using the disorientation to close the distance with its prey. Crabsquids are also physically powerful, capable of damaging vehicle hulls with their claws. They patrol set routes around ruin structures, and their territories can be identified by the faint electrical crackle that precedes an EMP.

EMP Blast

The Crabsquid's signature ability. It fires an electromagnetic pulse that disables vehicle systems and kills all lights within range, leaving you blind and vulnerable in the deep.

Light Triggered

Crabsquids are highly sensitive to light sources. Vehicle headlights and personal flashlights attract them and trigger EMP blasts. Go dark in their territory to avoid detection.

How to Fight

Fighting a Crabsquid requires preparation and the right tools. The most critical step is to turn off all lights before entering its territory — darkness prevents it from triggering the EMP blast. If you must engage, use a Stasis Rifle to freeze it before closing in with a Survival Knife or Thermoblade. A Repulsion Cannon can knock it back and create breathing room. Vehicle combat is viable but risky: the EMP can disable your Seamoth at a critical moment. Keep your vehicle at range and use perimeter defense to repel the Crabsquid if it closes in. Always carry a backup light source that you can activate after the EMP fades.

Go Dark First

Turn off all lights before entering Crabsquid territory. Without a light trigger, it is less likely to fire its EMP and easier to approach or avoid.

Stasis Rifle

Freeze the Crabsquid with a Stasis Rifle before engaging. This prevents it from firing its EMP and lets you strike safely with a melee weapon.

Perimeter Defense

If using a Seamoth, keep distance and deploy perimeter defense if the Crabsquid closes in. The shock repels it and can interrupt an EMP charge.

Drops & Resources

The Crabsquid is not edible, but defeating one yields valuable crafting materials. Its electrical organs are a source of rare components used in advanced electronics and vehicle upgrades. The risk of engaging a Crabsquid is high due to its EMP and physical attacks, so weigh the material reward against the danger before committing to a fight.

Crabsquid Egg

RARE DROP

Occasionally found in Crabsquid nests near alien ruins. Can be hatched in an Alien Containment unit for observation or resource farming.

Electrical Organ

CRAFT MATERIAL

Dropped upon defeat. Used in advanced electronics and vehicle upgrade recipes that require EMP-resistant components.

Bioreactor Fuel

ENERGY

If killed, Crabsquid remains provide high Bioreactor energy yield due to their dense biomass and electrical tissue.

Scanning

DATABANK

Scanning a Crabsquid from a safe distance adds a databank entry. Use the Scanner while dark to avoid triggering its EMP.

Map Locations

Crabsquids are found in deep biomes and alien ruin complexes at 200 to 500m depth. They favor dark, enclosed environments like the Lost River corridors and ruined structures where their EMP abilities are most effective. Use the interactive map to identify Crabsquid-inhabited ruins and plan routes through deep biomes that avoid their patrol areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where to find Crabsquid?

Crabsquids are found in deep biomes and alien ruins at 200 to 500m depth. They favor dark, enclosed environments like the Lost River corridors and ruined structures where their EMP abilities are most effective. They patrol set routes around ruin complexes, so use the interactive map to identify Crabsquid-inhabited areas and plan routes that avoid their patrol zones.

How to deal with Crabsquid EMP?

To counter the Crabsquid EMP, turn off all lights before entering its territory — the EMP is triggered by light sources. Carry a backup Seaglide for emergency mobility after the pulse disables your vehicle. Use a Stasis Rifle to freeze the Crabsquid before it can fire the EMP. If the EMP does go off, stay calm, wait for your systems to come back online, and retreat to a safe distance before re-engaging.

Can Crabsquid damage vehicles?

Yes, the Crabsquid can damage vehicles in two ways. Its EMP blast temporarily disables Seamoth and PRAWN suit systems, leaving you immobilized and vulnerable. It also attacks vehicle hulls directly with its claws, dealing significant damage. A Crabsquid that catches you in an EMP followed by a physical assault can destroy a Seamoth quickly. Keep your vehicle at range and retreat immediately if the EMP fires.
