Boneshark
Fierce deep-water predator. Will pursue players relentlessly. Avoid without vehicle protection.
Quick Info
Description
The Boneshark is a fierce, heavily armored predator that roams the deeper biomes of Subnautica 2. Named for its bone-like cranial plating, this creature is fast, durable, and relentless in pursuit — once it locks onto a target, it will chase far beyond its initial encounter zone. Bonesharks are significantly more dangerous than Stalkers or Sandsharks, combining high speed, heavy damage, and aggressive persistence. Encountering one without a vehicle is a life-threatening situation. They are a primary reason deep exploration requires proper preparation and vehicle support.
Behavior & Ecology
Bonesharks are apex-level predators in the mid-to-deep biomes, patrolling open water and ambushing anything that crosses their path. Unlike the ambush-dependent Sandshark, the Boneshark actively hunts — it will spot a target from a distance and close in at high speed. Its bone-plated head provides natural armor, making it resistant to Survival Knife strikes and capable of absorbing vehicle-mounted weapons. Bonesharks are most active in low-light conditions and will pursue players for long distances, sometimes following them into adjacent biomes before giving up.
Relentless Pursuit
Once aggroed, Bonesharks chase targets over long distances — sometimes across biome borders — before abandoning the hunt.
Armored Skull
Bone-like cranial plating provides natural armor, making Bonesharks resistant to melee weapons and harder to kill than other predators.
How to Deal With / Approach
Bonesharks should never be engaged on foot. Their speed, damage, and pursuit range make them lethal to unprotected players. The safest strategy is to explore deep biomes exclusively in a vehicle — a Seamoth for speed, or a PRAWN suit for durability. If a Boneshark aggroes, use your vehicle's perimeter defense system or retreat to a sealed structure such as a base or the Cyclops. Trying to outswim a Boneshark without a vehicle is almost always fatal.
Never Go on Foot
Bonesharks outpace and out-damage swimmers. Always explore deep biomes in a vehicle with hull integrity to spare.
Use Perimeter Defense
Activate the Seamoth's perimeter defense system to shock pursuing Bonesharks and break aggro. The Cyclops can also deploy decoys.
Retreat to Shelter
Duck into a sealed base, the Cyclops, or a lifepod to break line of sight. Bonesharks will eventually lose interest if they cannot reach you.
Drops & Resources
Bonesharks are not edible and drop no unique resources. Their armored remains, if harvested after killing one, can serve as high-yield biomass for a Bioreactor, but the extreme danger of engaging them makes this impractical. Avoidance remains the recommended strategy.
No Unique Drops
NONEBonesharks do not drop any special or collectible resources. They are purely a hazard to avoid in deep biomes.
Bioreactor Fuel
ENERGYIf killed, remains provide high-yield biomass fuel. Not worth the risk of engaging such a dangerous predator for fuel alone.
Map Locations
Bonesharks inhabit deep biomes from 100m to 300m depth, beyond the relative safety of the shallows and kelp forests. They patrol open water in the deeper reaches, making any deep expedition potentially hazardous. Use the interactive map to identify deep biome boundaries and Boneshark patrol zones before descending.

Frequently Asked Questions
How dangerous are Bonesharks?
Bonesharks are very high danger predators. They deal heavy damage, are relentless in pursuit, and are one of the most threatening creatures in deep biomes. Their armored skulls make them resistant to melee weapons, and their speed means they can close distance on a swimming player faster than you can escape. Without a vehicle, a Boneshark encounter is a life-threatening emergency.
How to escape Bonesharks?
Use a vehicle like a Seamoth or PRAWN suit for protection, retreat to a sealed base or the Cyclops, and use perimeter defenses to deter pursuit. Do not try to outswim them on foot. The Seamoth's perimeter defense system shocks pursuing Bonesharks and can break aggro, while the Cyclops can deploy creature decoys to redirect their attention long enough to escape.
What biomes have Bonesharks?
Bonesharks inhabit deep biomes from 100m to 300m depth, including the deeper reaches beyond the safe shallows and kelp forests. They patrol open water in these zones and are a primary hazard of mid-depth exploration. Plan your deep expeditions around their patrol zones using the interactive map, and always bring a vehicle.
