Jellyray
Peaceful, bioluminescent ray that drifts through the Jellyshroom Caves. Completely harmless and beautiful to observe.
Quick Facts
Description
The Jellyray is a large, peaceful ray-like creature that drifts through the glowing Jellyshroom Caves of Subnautica 2. Its broad, translucent body is laced with bioluminescent veins that pulse with soft cyan and purple light, creating a mesmerizing display as it glides through the already-glowing cave systems. The Jellyray feeds on the bioluminescent fungi that line the cave walls, absorbing their light-producing compounds into its own tissue — a remarkable example of biological piggybacking that makes the creature itself glow. Despite its size, the Jellyray is entirely docile and will not react aggressively to players, simply drifting away if approached too closely. It is one of the most beautiful and tranquil creatures in the game, and observing a Jellyray gliding through a glowing Jellyshroom Cave is one of the most memorable sights in Subnautica 2.
Where to Find
Jellyrays are found exclusively in the Jellyshroom Caves at 150-300m depth. They drift through the glowing cave systems, feeding on bioluminescent fungi along the cave walls. They prefer the larger, more open chambers of the cave system where they have room to glide, and are most commonly found near clusters of Jellyshrooms — the large, glowing mushroom-like formations that give the caves their name.
Behavior & Combat
The Jellyray is completely harmless and has no combat behavior whatsoever. It is a passive drifter that glides slowly through the Jellyshroom Caves, feeding on bioluminescent fungi along the cave walls. If approached too closely, it will gently drift away rather than fleeing or attacking. It has no defensive abilities, no weapons, and cannot damage the player under any circumstances. No combat strategy is needed — the Jellyray is purely a creature to observe and enjoy. The only risk associated with Jellyrays is becoming so absorbed in watching their bioluminescent display that you lose track of your oxygen supply in the caves.
Bioluminescent Display
Pulsing cyan and purple light from bioluminescent veins in its translucent body. Absorbs light-producing compounds from the fungi it eats.
Gentle Drifter
Moves slowly through open cave chambers. If approached, it drifts away gently rather than fleeing. Completely non-aggressive and non-defensive.
Drops & Uses
If caught, the Jellyray yields Bioluminescent Tissue, a material that can be used in specialized crafting recipes involving light production and biochemistry. It can also be cooked for a modest food value, though its bioluminescent tissue makes it less nutritious than standard food fish. The tissue is primarily used for crafting light-emitting base decorations and specialized scanner upgrades.
Bioluminescent Tissue
CRAFT MATERIALUsed in crafting light-emitting base decorations and specialized scanner upgrades. Harvested from the Jellyray's glowing veins.
Cooked Jellyray
+12 FOODCooked at a Fabricator. Modest food value, less nutritious than standard fish due to bioluminescent tissue content.
Raw Jellyray
+8 FOODEaten raw, restores +8 Food. Low value due to bioluminescent compounds. Not recommended as a primary food source.
Bioreactor Fuel
ENERGYThe bioluminescent tissue provides above-average energy yield in a Bioreactor. A decent fuel source if caught in quantity.
Tips
Enjoy the Show
Watching a Jellyray drift through a glowing Jellyshroom Cave is one of the most beautiful sights in the game. Take time to observe them — they are completely harmless and will not disturb you.
Watch Your Oxygen
The main risk of Jellyray watching is losing track of your oxygen supply in the caves. The Jellyshroom Caves are deep (150-300m), so always monitor your air and plan your exit route.
Harvest Tissue for Crafting
If you need Bioluminescent Tissue for crafting, Jellyrays are the best source. They are easy to catch since they drift slowly and do not flee aggressively.
Not a Primary Food Source
Jellyrays provide less food than Peepers or Boomerangs. Use them for their tissue, not for food. If you need sustenance in the caves, bring cured fish from the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Jellyray dangerous?
No, the Jellyray is completely harmless. It is a peaceful, passive creature that will not attack or defend itself. If approached too closely, it will gently drift away. It poses zero threat to players under any circumstances. The only risk associated with Jellyrays is becoming so absorbed in watching their bioluminescent display that you lose track of your oxygen supply in the deep caves.
Where to find Jellyrays?

Can you eat Jellyray?
Yes, Jellyrays can be caught and cooked for a modest food value. Raw Jellyray gives +8 Food, and cooked gives +12 Food. However, their bioluminescent tissue makes them less nutritious than standard food fish like Peepers or Boomerangs. Use Jellyrays primarily for their Bioluminescent Tissue rather than as a food source.
