Description

The Warper is not a natural creature but an alien construct built by the Precursors to monitor and contain the Kharaa bacterial infection. It resembles a biomechanical entity with a glowing central core and shifting appendages. The Warper's primary function is to detect infected lifeforms — including the player — and teleport them to designated containment zones. Once it detects infection, it becomes hostile, warping the player away from their current location and sometimes teleporting aggressive predators nearby to compound the threat. Warpers are found near alien ruins and in the deep zones surrounding the Lost River, where Precursor research facilities are concentrated. They are passive toward uninfected individuals, making the cure for Kharaa the most effective long-term counter.

Behavior & Ecology

Warpers patrol the deep zones around alien ruins and the Lost River, scanning for signs of Kharaa infection. When an infected player enters their detection range, the Warper activates and begins its containment protocol. This involves teleporting the player to a random location — sometimes into dangerous territory — and occasionally warping in hostile creatures to further test the target. Warpers do not attack uninfected players and will remain passive once the infection is cured. They are not natural fauna and do not follow typical predator behavior patterns; instead, they execute their programmed containment directives with mechanical precision. Their teleportation ability makes them uniquely dangerous, as it can separate a player from their vehicle or base without warning.

Infection Detection

Warpers scan for Kharaa infection. They only target infected players and become passive once the infection is cured. This makes the cure a permanent solution to Warper hostility.

Teleport & Summon

When hostile, the Warper teleports the player to a random location and can warp in aggressive predators. This can strand you far from your vehicle in dangerous territory.

How to Counter

The most effective counter to Warpers is curing your Kharaa infection. Once cured, Warpers become completely passive and will no longer target you. Until you can obtain the cure, stay in a vehicle when traversing Warper-inhabited zones — the vehicle absorbs the teleport effect and keeps you mobile. Move quickly through alien ruin areas and the Lost River to minimize exposure. If a Warper does teleport you, immediately assess your surroundings, check for summoned predators, and use your Seaglide to return to your vehicle or a safe location. Carrying a First Aid Kit is essential, as the disorientation and potential predator encounters can lead to damage.

Cure the Infection

The most permanent counter. Once your Kharaa infection is cured, Warpers become passive and will no longer teleport or target you. Prioritize finding the cure.

Stay in Vehicles

Vehicles absorb the Warper's teleport effect and keep you mobile. Travel through Warper zones in a Seamoth or PRAWN suit rather than swimming on foot.

Move Quickly

Don't linger in Warper-inhabited zones. Transit through alien ruin areas and the Lost River as quickly as possible to minimize detection and teleport exposure.

Drops & Resources

As an alien construct, the Warper does not drop organic materials. Defeating one yields technological components that can be used in advanced crafting and research. However, Warpers respawn after a short time, so killing them is a temporary measure at best. The more sustainable approach is to cure your infection rather than fight Warpers. Scanning a Warper adds valuable Precursor research data to your databank.

Precursor Component

RARE DROP

Dropped upon defeat. Used in advanced crafting recipes that require Precursor technology, including certain vehicle and base upgrades.

Bioreactor Fuel

ENERGY

If destroyed, Warper remains provide moderate Bioreactor energy yield from their power core. Not a practical fuel source due to respawn behavior.

Scanning

DATABANK

Scanning a Warper adds a Precursor databank entry with research data on its construction and containment protocols. Use the Scanner from a safe distance.

No Unique Drops

NONE

Warpers drop no unique organic resources. As alien constructs, their value lies in scanning data and the rare Precursor components they occasionally yield.

Map Locations

Warpers patrol the deep zones surrounding alien ruins and the Lost River, from 100 to 900m depth. They are concentrated near Precursor research facilities and containment sites. Use the interactive map to identify Warper-inhabited areas and plan routes through the Lost River that minimize encounters until your infection is cured.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Warper?

A Warper is an alien construct created by the Precursors to monitor and contain the Kharaa bacterial infection. It is not a natural creature but a biomechanical entity designed to detect infected lifeforms and teleport them to designated containment zones. When it detects infection in a player, it becomes hostile and begins its containment protocol, teleporting the player and sometimes warping in aggressive predators to test or eliminate the target.

How to avoid Warper teleport?

The most effective way to avoid Warper teleportation is to cure your Kharaa infection as soon as possible. Warpers only target infected individuals, so once cured, they become completely passive and will not teleport you. Until then, travel in a vehicle through Warper-inhabited zones — vehicles absorb the teleport effect. Move quickly through alien ruin areas and the Lost River, and carry a Seaglide and First Aid Kit in case you are teleported away from your vehicle.

Are Warpers killable?

Yes, Warpers can be killed. They have moderate health and can be defeated with a Survival Knife or Thermoblade, or vehicle weapons. However, Warpers respawn after a short time, so killing them is only a temporary measure. New Warpers will eventually patrol the same areas. Curing your Kharaa infection is a far more permanent and efficient solution than fighting Warpers repeatedly.
