Description

The Sandshark is a stealthy ambush predator that buries itself beneath the sandy seafloor, waiting motionless for prey to swim overhead. Once a target is within range, the Sandshark erupts from the sand in a burst of sediment, striking before the victim can react. Because it is nearly invisible when buried, the Sandshark is one of the most deceptive threats in Subnautica 2 — you often will not know one is there until it is already attacking. Its habitat overlaps with resource-rich sandy flats, making caution essential when harvesting near the seafloor.

Behavior & Ecology

Sandsharks are patient hunters. They dig into the sand until only the faintest outline is visible, then wait for fish or players to pass close. When triggered, they launch upward with explosive speed, grab their prey, and drag it toward the seafloor. After an attack, a Sandshark will often re-bury itself nearby, resetting the ambush. They are most active in open sandy areas where the substrate is soft enough to burrow, and they tend to avoid rocky or kelp-covered terrain where concealment is impossible.

Sand Burrowing

Buries itself completely in the sand, leaving almost no visible trace. The only telltale sign is a faint disturbance on the seafloor surface.

Explosive Ambush

Strikes with no warning, erupting from the sand in a cloud of sediment. The attack is fast enough to catch most prey off guard.

How to Deal With / Approach

The key to surviving Sandsharks is vigilance and positioning. Since they are nearly invisible when buried, you must watch for subtle sand disturbances on the seafloor — small mounds or sediment clouds are the only warning. Stay elevated off the seafloor when crossing sandy areas, and use a vehicle for protection if available. If a Sandshark attacks, swim upward immediately to break out of its strike range, then reposition before it re-buries.

Stay Off the Seafloor

Swim above the sandy bottom. Sandsharks strike upward from the sand, so maintaining elevation reduces your exposure.

Watch the Sand

Look for faint mounds or sediment clouds on the seafloor. These are the only visual clues that a Sandshark is buried below.

Use a Vehicle

A Seamoth or PRAWN suit absorbs Sandshark bites and lets you harvest safely from sandy areas without foot exposure.

Drops & Resources

Sandsharks are not edible and drop no unique resources. If killed, they yield only generic biomass suitable for Bioreactor fuel. Given the danger of provoking them, there is little incentive to hunt Sandsharks for materials — avoidance is the practical strategy.

No Unique Drops

NONE

Sandsharks do not drop any special or collectible resources. They are purely a hazard to avoid.

Bioreactor Fuel

ENERGY

If killed, remains can serve as biomass fuel. Low value relative to the risk of engaging an ambush predator.

Map Locations

Sandsharks inhabit sandy areas of the seafloor, typically between 50m and 150m depth. They prefer open, soft substrate where they can bury themselves, and are commonly found on the flats surrounding grassy plateaus and between biome borders. Use the interactive map to identify sandy zones and plan routes that stay above the seafloor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to spot Sandsharks?

Look for disturbances in the sand on the seafloor, such as small mounds or clouds of sediment. Sandsharks are nearly invisible when buried, so stay alert in sandy areas. The only reliable visual clue is a faint outline or slight texture change in the sand where the creature is hiding beneath the surface.

Do Sandsharks burrow?

Yes, Sandsharks bury themselves in the sand and wait for prey to pass overhead before launching a surprise attack. They dig into soft substrate until they are completely concealed, then erupt upward when a target is within striking range. After an attack, they typically re-bury nearby to reset the ambush.

How to avoid Sandshark attacks?

Stay off the seafloor in sandy areas, use a vehicle for protection, and watch for sand disturbances that reveal a buried Sandshark. Swimming at mid-water depth rather than hugging the bottom dramatically reduces your risk. If attacked, swim upward immediately to escape the strike zone before the Sandshark can re-engage.
