Gasopod
Large, slow-moving creature that releases a damaging gas cloud when threatened. Keep your distance.
Quick Info
Description
The Gasopod is a large, slow-moving creature that roams the grassy plateaus. While it is not predatory and will not chase you, it has a potent defense mechanism: when a player or predator gets too close, the Gasopod releases a cloud of toxic gas that deals continuous damage to anything inside it. The gas cloud lingers for several seconds, so even after the Gasopod moves on, the area remains hazardous. The safest approach is simply to give Gasopods a wide berth.
Behavior & Ecology
Gasopods graze peacefully on the seafloor, filtering food from the sediment. They are not territorial and will not pursue threats — instead, they rely on their gas cloud as a deterrent. When startled, they release a burst of gas and continue drifting away. Gasopods are often found in small groups, which means triggering one can set off a chain reaction of gas clouds. The gas is heavier than water and tends to linger near the seafloor, making bottom-hugging routes through grassy plateaus risky.
Gas Cloud Defense
Releases a lingering toxic gas cloud when threatened. The cloud persists after the Gasopod leaves and damages anything inside it.
Herd Behavior
Often found in small groups. Startling one Gasopod can trigger multiple gas releases, creating overlapping danger zones.
How to Deal With / Approach
The Gasopod is not aggressive, so the best strategy is avoidance. Maintain distance and swim above the seafloor when crossing grassy plateaus to stay clear of lingering gas clouds. If you must pass near a Gasopod, do so quickly and from above, where the gas is less concentrated. A vehicle like a Seamoth or PRAWN suit can absorb the gas damage, but prolonged exposure will deplete hull integrity.
Swim Above
Gas clouds concentrate near the seafloor. Stay elevated when traversing grassy plateaus to avoid lingering pockets.
Pass Quickly
If you must cross near a Gasopod, move fast to minimize time in any gas cloud it may release.
Use a Vehicle
Seamoths and PRAWN suits absorb gas damage, but watch hull integrity during prolonged exposure.
Drops & Resources
Gasopods are not edible and drop no standard resources. If killed, they may yield a small amount of biomass suitable for Bioreactor fuel, but the effort and risk are rarely worth it compared to simply avoiding them.
Gasopod Gas
HAZARDThe gas cloud itself is a hazard, not a collectible resource. It cannot be harvested or stored.
Bioreactor Fuel
ENERGYIf killed, the remains can be used as biomass fuel. Low yield relative to the effort and risk involved.
Map Locations
Gasopods are found in the grassy plateaus biome, typically between 50m and 200m depth. They graze along the seafloor and are often encountered in small herds. Use the interactive map to identify grassy plateau zones and plan routes that minimize Gasopod encounters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Gasopod dangerous?
Gasopod is moderately dangerous. It is not aggressive and will not chase you, but it will release a damaging gas cloud when it feels threatened by nearby players. The real danger is the lingering gas cloud, which can catch you off guard if you swim through an area a startled Gasopod has just left.
What happens if Gasopod gas hits you?
Gasopod gas deals continuous damage over time while you remain in the cloud. Swim away quickly to minimize health loss. The damage is not instant but accumulates the longer you stay inside the cloud, so even a brief exposure is manageable if you exit promptly.
Can I kill a Gasopod?
Yes, Gasopods can be killed, but they are large and have significant health. It is usually safer and more efficient to simply avoid them, since killing a Gasopod risks prolonged gas exposure during the fight and yields little useful loot. If you must engage, use a vehicle-mounted weapon or the Survival Knife from behind, outside the gas cloud's radius.
