Quick answer: 67 fauna entries total — 32 passive, 18 defensive, 12 aggressive, 5 leviathan. Below: the full list organized by category, with biome and depth range, plus a verdict column for each (safe to scan, safe to farm, or avoid).
How we categorize fauna
In Subnautica 2, fauna is tagged with one of four behaviors: passive (will not attack even if provoked), defensive (attacks only when threatened), aggressive (attacks on sight or sound), and leviathan (boss-class, can one-shot a Seamoth). Each entry below lists the behavior, the biome(s) where it spawns, the depth range in meters, and a quick verdict.

Where to scan every creature
Most creatures can be scanned in place with a regular Scanner. The exceptions are the leviathans — scanning a Reaper or Sea Dragon requires a Scanner with the Mark III upgrade and a deployed Camera Drone. Save your drone for these.
Bestiary completion rewards
Scanning all 67 entries unlocks the "Biologist" achievement. Scanning all 12 mature-stage entries unlocks the "Completionist" achievement. The rewards are cosmetic — a unique submarine skin and a banner — but the achievements themselves gate two trophies on the Steam list.
