Deep Grand Reef
Darker extension of the Grand Reef, featuring glowing flora and dangerous deep-sea creatures. Advanced materials found here.
Quick Facts
Overview
The Deep Grand Reef is the darker, deeper extension of the Grand Reef, descending from 300 to 600 meters into the cold abyss. Where the Grand Reef is a breathtaking gallery of bioluminescent flora, the Deep Grand Reef is its shadowed counterpart — the glowing plant life here is sparser but more intense, casting sharp bands of light across the steep drop-offs and deep cave systems. The water is colder, the pressure is crushing, and the fauna is significantly more dangerous.
This biome is where advanced materials become accessible. Diamond and Gold deposits are concentrated in the deep caves and along the reef walls, but the real prize is Kyanite — a rare crystalline material found only in the deepest biomes, essential for the most powerful vehicle upgrades and end-game crafting. Resource nodes are scattered throughout the deep caves, and the seafloor is littered with high-value mineral deposits that do not spawn in shallower waters.
The Deep Grand Reef is high danger. Spine Eels patrol the deep caves with venomous spines that deal heavy damage. Crabsquids use electromagnetic pulses to disable vehicle electronics, leaving you stranded in the dark. Warpers can teleport players unexpectedly, separating you from your vehicle and dropping you into hostile territory. A Prawn Suit is strongly recommended for both depth protection and predator defence. Thermal protection is needed for the cold, and oxygen management is critical — the deep caves can trap you far from the surface if you are not careful with your air supply.
Resources
The Deep Grand Reef yields advanced materials found only at extreme depths. Diamond and Gold are concentrated in the deep caves, while Kyanite — the rarest of the three — is essential for the most powerful end-game upgrades and crafting.
Diamond
Concentrated in deep caves and along reef walls. Used in advanced tool and weapon crafting.
Gold
From deep outcrops in the reef walls. Used in advanced electronics and reactor components.
Kyanite
Rare crystalline material found only in the deepest caves. Essential for the most powerful end-game upgrades.
Creatures
The Deep Grand Reef is home to some of the most dangerous deep-sea creatures in the game. Spine Eels patrol the deep caves with venomous spines, Crabsquids disable vehicles with electromagnetic pulses, and Warpers can teleport players away from safety. A Prawn Suit is essential for surviving encounters here.
Spine Eel
High danger venomous predator. Patrols the deep caves with venomous spines that deal heavy damage.
Crabsquid
Dangerous deep predator. Uses electromagnetic pulses to disable vehicle electronics in the dark.
Warper
Anomalous creature that can teleport players unexpectedly, separating them from vehicles and safety.
Exploration Tips
Use a Prawn Suit
A Prawn Suit is strongly recommended for the Deep Grand Reef. It handles the crushing depth, withstands predator attacks better than a Seamoth, and provides the mobility needed to navigate the deep caves. The suit's grappling arm is invaluable for traversing the steep reef walls.
Bring Thermal Protection
The Deep Grand Reef is very cold at 300 to 600m. Equip a Reinforced Suit or thermal upgrade to mitigate the cold damage. Without adequate protection, the cold will steadily drain your health, compounding the danger from predators and depth.
Watch Your Oxygen
The deep caves can trap you far from the surface. Track your oxygen carefully, and never push deeper into a cave system than your air supply allows for a round trip. If a Warper teleports you, immediately orient yourself and head for your vehicle before oxygen becomes critical.
Prioritise Kyanite
Kyanite is the rarest and most valuable resource in the Deep Grand Reef, found only in the deepest caves. Plan your dives around Kyanite node locations, and harvest Diamond and Gold opportunistically on the way. Prioritise the material you cannot get elsewhere.
Map Locations
The Deep Grand Reef lies below the standard Grand Reef at 300–600m depth. Use the interactive map to locate deep caves, mark Kyanite and resource nodes, and plan Prawn Suit descent routes through the reef system.

Frequently Asked Questions
How deep is the Deep Grand Reef?
The Deep Grand Reef extends from 300 to 600m depth, significantly deeper than the standard Grand Reef which ranges from 200 to 500m. This depth range requires a Prawn Suit or Cyclops for safe exploration, as a Seamoth cannot withstand the pressure without extensive depth upgrades. The extreme depth also means oxygen management is critical, as the deep caves can trap you far from the surface.
What resources are in the Deep Grand Reef?
The Deep Grand Reef contains Diamond, Gold, and Kyanite. Diamond and Gold are concentrated in the deep caves and along the reef walls, while Kyanite is a rare crystalline material found only in the deepest biomes. Kyanite is essential for the most powerful vehicle upgrades and end-game crafting, making the Deep Grand Reef a critical destination for players preparing for the game's deepest content.
What creatures are in the Deep Grand Reef?
The Deep Grand Reef is home to Spine Eels, Crabsquids, and Warpers. Spine Eels patrol the deep caves with venomous spines that deal heavy damage. Crabsquids use electromagnetic pulses to disable vehicle electronics, leaving you stranded in the dark. Warpers are anomalous creatures that can teleport players unexpectedly, separating them from their vehicles. A Prawn Suit is strongly recommended for protection against all three threats.
